Recently, Dr. Michael Heindl, president of Northwest Mississippi Community College, announced the appointment of Jeff Horton as vice president of Administration and Finance.
Horton replaces Gary Mosley, who retired as vice president of Finance on June 30.
Horton has extensive experience in higher education finance and administration, having served as vice president of finance and operations at Lamar State College in Texas and vice president of Financial Affairs at Southwest Mississippi Community College. His experience also includes chief financial officer at Hopkinsville Community College in Kentucky and assistant chief financial officer at Mississippi College. Horton also served as controller at Hinds Community College, where he also taught accounting courses.
In the private sector, Horton has worked as a staff accountant, auditor, and as a financial accounting analyst. He is also a Certified Public Accountant.
Horton is a native of Jackson. He attended Hinds Community College and earned a Bachelor and Master of Professional Accountancy from Mississippi State University. Horton is currently a doctoral candidate in Public Policy and Administration at Jackson State University.
In his role at Northwest, Horton is responsible for the operations of the Business Office, Human Resources, Physical Plant, Bookstores, Post Office and Food Services.
“I want to do my part to make sure the college is in a financial situation where we can react to opportunities and strategically reinvest in the college so that we can stay at the forefront of how we deliver higher education. I have to be able to see the whole overall picture and manage the moving parts effectively, so that we can react to any unplanned situation, and can also not only plan for our future goals, but be able to set aside investments for them,” Horton said.
He is married to the former Dee Fitch of Jackson. They are the parents of one girl, Evie, and three boys, Jake, Walter and Jack. He and his family live in Nesbit. Horton is also co-founder and President of Stop SMA, an organization whose mission is to promote Spinal Muscular Atrophy awareness and increase community involvement resulting in monetary investments toward leading research and SMA family support.
“My family and I are thrilled to be here. We love the area and have settled in really well. I’m happy to be at Northwest and am really excited about the team that we have here. We are looking forward to things to come,” Horton said.
“Mr. Horton’s many years of experience in community college finance, both inside and outside the state of Mississippi, uniquely positioned him to lead at this time in this key executive role as Northwest’s next vice president of administration and finance. We are excited that Mr. Horton has joined the Northwest family and look forward to his leadership for years to come,” Heindl said.
