Northwest President announces retirement

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Board of Trustees was informed on Jan. 11 by Dr. Gary Lee Spears of his desire to retire from service as the college’s eighth president. The board, expressing appreciation for his service, approved his request, which will become effective June 30, 2018.

A proud Northwest graduate and 2007 Alumnus of the Year, Dr. Spears has faithfully served the college for 43 years. Prior to being named president July 1, 2005, Dr. Spears served as registrar and director of Admissions and Records for 25 years. He holds an Associate of Applied Science and an Associate of Education from Northwest, a bachelor’s degree in social science and master’s degree in counseling from Delta State University and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Mississippi.

Following his retirement, Dr. Spears and his wife, Marilyn, will make their home in Oxford. They are the parents of two adult sons, Jared and Daniel, and have four grandchildren.

More information on Dr. Spears’ accomplishments and record of service will be provided at a later date.
