Northwest students shine in SkillsUSA state competition

Students in Northwest Mississippi Community College’s Career-Technical programs traveled to Jackson Feb. 28 – March 1 to participate in the 2017 SkillsUSA Mississippi State Competition.

First place winners from Northwest were Jared Ezell of Soso, Power Equipment; Tyler Stampley of Como, Cosmetology; Anthony Clark of Oxford, HVAC; Jonathan Wilkes of Courtland, Major Appliance and Refrigeration and Evan Pinon of Horn Lake, Auto Refinishing.

Second place winners were Emily Mills of Como and Katelynn Smith of Hernando, Esthetics; Benita Rameriz of Horn Lake and Kaitlyn Cook of Independence, Nail Care and Caleb Dunavent of Como, HVAC.

Third place winners were Kaitlin Wallace of Hernando, Welding Sculpture and Matthew Richardson of Batesville, Electrical Construction Wiring.

Also participating in the competition were LaDarius Fields of Lamar, Dakota Kite of Senatobia and Nicholas Smith of Southaven, Welding Fabrication; Austin Howard of Como, Welding; Charles Haggerty of Coila, Automotive Service; Jeremy Shoup of Hickory Flat, Collision Repair; Spencer Turner of Batesville, Electrical Construction Wiring and Layton Campbell of Oxford, Job Skill Demo.

“We had 20 students compete in 16 events. We had a great time and brought home many medals and banners to demonstrate just how awesome our programs are here at Northwest. We had an overall 12 medals this year, which is fantastic. Not only are we proud of this group of students for their exceptional academic and technical skills, but also their level of professionalism that they emitted during the event,” said Robin Douglas, assistant dean of Career, Technical and Workforce Education.
