Northwest Singers to perform at First Baptist Church Senatobia
The Northwest Mississippi Community College Singers and Chamber Choir will present a concert on Sunday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Senatobia.
Selections featured in the concert include “Ave Maria” by Javier Busto, “Lamentations of Jeremiah” by Z. Randall Stroope, which are five carefully structured poems unified by the common theme of lament over the fall of Jerusalem and the temple in 587 B.C. to King Nebuchadnezzar and to the Babylonians. The Chamber Choir will perform a portion of G.F. Handel’s “Messiah” and “Here’s One,” arranged by Dr. Kenneth Sipley, division director of Northwest’s Fine Arts Division. “Jesus on the Mainline” will feature a Dixieland band.
The choirs are under the direction of Susanne Spencer VanDyke, director of choral activities at Northwest, and will be accompanied by Dr. Saundra Bishop, pianist.
Recently, VanDyke announced that the Singers had been invited to participate in the New York premiere performance of Dan Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living,” on January 19, 2014 in Carnegie Hall’s Issac Stern Auditorium. The choirs will perform under the direction of Dr. James Meaders. The performance is part of the Distinguished Concerts International New York. “We are thrilled to be able to sing at Carnegie Hall with Dr. Meaders and the world renowned Mississippi College Singers,” VanDyke said.
