Northwest welcomes new faculty at Lafayette-Yalobusha Technical Center

    Northwest Mississippi Community College welcomes new faculty at the Lafayette-Yalobusha Technical Center in Oxford.

    Kathy Buchanan of Oxford is joining the faculty full-time to teach business and office technology. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in business education and Master of Education in vocational and technical education from Mississippi State University.

    Buchanan has worked on Northwest’s Oxford campus since 1998 as a computer instructor. Prior to Northwest, she worked at Houston Vocational Center as the business and computer technology teacher and at Okolona Vocational Complex as the business and computer technology teacher. Buchanan served as an adjunct instructor for Itawamba Community College for seven years.

    Lisa Russell of Oxford replaces Dale Boatright who retired as business and office technology instructor at LYTC. She has a bachelor’s degree in business education from The University of Mississippi and a master’s degree from Mississippi State University.

    Prior to Northwest, Russell taught business and technology for Lafayette High School for 24 years. During that time she taught accounting, keyboarding, web design, business law, business communications, personal finance and general business.

    Another new face at Northwest this fall will be Gwen Shirley, CFNP of Batesville. She graduated from Northwest with her practical nursing degree (LPN) and associate nursing degree. She obtained her bachelor of nursing degree (BSN) from Baptist College of Health Sciences and her master of nursing degree (MSN) from Delta State University. She received her ANCC certification and APRN license in 2009.

    Prior to Northwest, she worked as a family nurse practitioner for MidSouth Medicine, Inc. in Southaven and Lindsay Clinic in Pontotoc. She served as the director of quality assurance for Batesville Specialty Hospital in 2008. She worked as the director of risk management and employee health nurse at Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville. She worked as an LPN for Tri-Lakes and the Panola County Jail. She has also served as an RN at Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi in Oxford.
