Tate County Fair Board establishes scholarship at Northwest

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of a new scholarship, according to Sybil Canon, associate vice president of development and special projects. The Tate County Fair Board has established the Tate County Fair Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Shelli Benton, Tate County Extension Office Director, who is a board member of the fair said that the board wished to give back to Northwest for allowing them to host the fair at the Northwest arena since 2007. Board member Steve Davis made the suggestion to the board to establish a scholarship with the Northwest Foundation.

“The Tate County Fair was a vision of the Tate County 4-H volunteers. We conducted the first fair at Gabbert Park and that year we decided that we could not do such an event alone. We reached out to the community for volunteers, and the Fair Board was formed. That was the year we took the fair to the Northwest Arena,” Benton said.

“We are pleased to offer the Northwest Farm and Arena for use by the Tate County Fair Board and the Extension Service. We appreciate very much the support of the citizens of Tate County and stand ready to serve in any way we can. It is especially gratifying that the Fair Committee has now begun the process for establishing the Tate County Fair Endowed Scholarship Fund with a generous donation to the Northwest Foundation. This will offer permanent scholarship assistance to Tate County Students for generations to come,” said Dr. Gary Lee Spears, president of Northwest.
