Career Planning Checklist

What To Do and When To Do It
Career Exploration and planning starts with the first day of your freshman year. But, do not worry if you waited to begin this process. The important thing is that you begin to plan. Here are some tips to get you started in the right direction.

  1. What do I think I want to do when I graduate and how are my classes, extracurricular activities and jobs helping me confirm or challenge these goals?
  2. Get good grades. Now is not the time to slack off. Many employers do consider grade point averages, and good grades can give you an edge. If you are having problems achieving good grades, seek tutorial help or form a study group.
  3. Develop strong written and oral communication skills. Employers will expect you to be able to write meaningful documents and carry on intelligent conversations.
  4. Take control of your time. Develop good study habits while still being involved with extracurricular activities. Good time management skills will be the key to your success in college and in your career.
  5. Join student clubs and organizations. Employers are eager to hire recent grads that have the leadership and teamwork experience you gain by getting involved in student clubs and organizations.
  6. Explore available options within your major. See an adviser at least once a semster to make sure your academic career stays on track.
  7. Acquire computer skills. Learn tools beyond Microsoft Office.
  8. Get to know faculty and staff. Get extra help when needed.
  9. Set personal goals and evaluate them periodically.
  10. Visit the Career Center. Use the resources that are available in the Center's computer lab. Read job descriptions, resource books, and online research tools in order to match your interest with your career goals.
  11. Conduct information interviews. Visit with professionals who are doing what you want to do. This will help you explore career options, research potential leads, and develop strong interpersonal skills.
  12. Think and act globally. Stay abreast of current events.
  13. Learn a foreign language. Pursue international educational and travel opportunities. Become a well-rounded person who is open to unique experiences.
  14. Attend career workshops.
