Several high schools participate in 7-on-7 football camp

Some north Mississippi high schools got a head start on the 2008 football season by participating in Northwest Mississippi Community College's 7-on-7 Football Camp June 5 in Senatobia. The camp was sponsored by Sycamore Bank, Gateway Tire, and Cellularsouth.

Northwest first-year Head Football Coach Ricky Woods and his staff headed up the event. Seven different high schools and around 250 players participated in the camp.

The purpose of the camp was for high schools to compete against each other in various passing, blocking, and tackling drills in preparation for the 2008 season.

Two former Rangers inducted into Hall of Fame

A former athlete and a former coach, representing Northwest Mississippi Community College, were inducted as members of the Mississippi Community/Junior College Sports Hall of Fame (SHF). Pro football standout Cortez Kennedy of Wilson, Ark., and former head women’s basketball coach Harry Adair of Ingomar were among the 30 inductees at the ceremony held April 22 at Copiah-Lincoln’s Wesson campus.

Kennedy lettered as a defensive tackle at Northwest in 1986 and 1987. He led the Rangers to a two-year record of 20-5-1, including the MACJC state and north division championships in 1987. He was selected All-Region XXIII and first team MACJC All-State in 1987 for sending Northwest to the Jayhawk Bowl in Coffeyville, Kansas.

After leaving Northwest, Kennedy transferred to the University of Miami where he collected 92 tackles, 22 for loss, and 7.5 sacks while leading the Hurricanes to the National Championship in 1990. He was chosen first team All-America by The Sporting News.

The third player taken in the 1990 NFL draft, Kennedy was selected by the Seattle Seahawks. In his third NFL season, he was chosen as NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

In his 11-year NFL career, Kennedy played in seven Pro Bowls, in 116 consecutive games, and collected 667 tackles, 58 sacks, and three interceptions.

Kennedy became the 10th player in Seahawk history to be named to the team’s Ring of Honor in 2006. He is a 1997 inductee of the Northwest Sports Hall of Fame.

Coach Adair retired from Northwest in 1987 after serving as head women’s basketball coach for eight seasons. He led the Lady Rangers to five North Division championships, four state and regional titles, and a national championship.

He claimed a record of 236-28 and had a career record of 1106-301. Adair was named Mississippi Junior College Coach of the Year four times, Region 23 Coach of the Year four times, and was selected NJCAA Coach of the Year. He is a 2006 Northwest Sports Hall of Fame inductee.

Before coming to Northwest, Adair was principal and basketball coach at Hatley High School. He was president of the Mississippi Association of Coaches and a member of the Mississippi High School Activities Association and the Southeastern Coaches Association.

After leaving Northwest, Adair coached at Calhoun Academy for two years and later served as Union County Superintendent of Education from 1991 to 1996.

Adair and his wife, Sarah live in Ingomar where he raises and trains Tennessee Walking Horses and racking horses. The Adairs have four sons and eight grandchildren.

“It was an honor for Coach Harry Adair and Cortez Kennedy to be our representatives this year,” said Northwest President, Dr. Gary Lee Spears. “They have each played a big part in the history of our athletic program at the college.”

Also at the ceremony to congratulate the new honorees were last year’s charter inductees: former Head Football Coach Bobby Franklin of Senatobia; current athletic director and former Head Baseball Coach Donny Castle; and former Head Baseball Coach Jim Miles.
