Lady Rangers put scare into No. 4 Copiah-Lincoln

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Lady Rangers played some of their best basketball of the season and put a scare into the No. 4 Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves Nov. 19 in Wesson.

Unfortunately, Northwest couldn't get the key baskets it needed down the stretch and fell to Copiah-Lincoln 78-68. The Lady Rangers dropped to 2-3 overall.

Northwest wasn't intimidated by the Lady Wolves. The Lady Rangers claimed a 31-21 lead with 6:36 left in the first half on a three-pointer by guard Lanita Futrell of Coldwater who scored all 10 of her points in the opening period. Northwest settled for a 36-31 advantage at intermission.

Copiah-Lincoln opened the second stanza with a 19-3 run to take a 50-39 lead, but Northwest wouldn't go away. 

Lady Ranger forward Hope Adams of Oxford hit a three-pointer to cap a 13-3 run and allow Northwest to cut its deficit to 53-52 midway through the second half. That's as close as the Lady Rangers could get.

Northwest guard Sandricka Bowen of Holly Springs nailed a three-pointer and guard Tamara Wadlington of Oxford added a basket to try to spark a late rally, but the Lady Rangers simply ran out of time.

Adams (pictured right) led Northwest with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Wadlington chipped in with 13 points. De'Kisha Fondon of Water Valley added 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Rangers host Northwest Shoals (Ala.) Saturday, Nov. 21 at Howard Coliseum in Senatobia. Tip off is at 2 p.m.
 


 

NWCC sqaunders late lead in loss to Volunteer State

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Lady Rangers had several leads in the second half of their battle with the Volunteer State Lady Pioneers Nov. 17 at Howard Coliseum in Senatobia.

Holding those leads was the problem as Northwest dropped a 69-65 decision to fall to 2-2 overall.

The Lady Rangers overcame a 43-38 deficit in the second half with a 22-11 run to claim a 60-54 advantage with 6:14 remaining. Sophomore forward Hope Adams of Oxford sparked Northwest during that rally with seven points, including a three-point basket. De'Kisha Fondon of Water Valley also added a three-pointer, while Lanita Futrell of Coldwater scored on a lay up.

Volunteer State battled back to take a 61-60 lead, but Fondon stepped up with another three-pointer to put the Lady Rangers in front 65-63 with 3:52 left.

That's the last time Northwest would lead in the contest. The Lady Pioneers scored the final six points of the night to claim the victory.

The Lady Rangers shot just 31.6 percent from the field by converting 25 of 79 attempts. Northwest was five of 24 from three-point range.

Adams led the Lady Rangers with 15 points and added seven rebounds. Futrell and Sandrick Bowen of Holly Springs chipped in with 10 points each. Futrell, Fondon, and Dequashia Simpson of Milan, Tenn., had eight rebounds each.

The Lady Rangers travel to Wesson Thursday, Nov. 19 to battle Copiah-Lincoln. Northwest returns home to host Northwest Shoals (Ala.) Saturday, Nov. 21 in Senatobia. The game starts at 2 p.m.
 



 

Lady Rangers use free throws to knock off Hinds

It's a well known fact that free throws can win or lose a basketball game. The Northwest Mississippi Community College Lady Rangers proved that theory twice in one week. 

Northwest converted 24 of 35 free throws en route to knocking off the Hinds Lady Bulldogs Nov. 12 in Utica.  Just three days earlier, Northwest made just 16 of 35 free throw attempts in a 78-61 loss to Arkansas Baptist.

The Lady Rangers, 2-1 overall, trailed Hinds 17-15 with 7:30 left in the first half. Northwest used a three-point play by sophomore forward Hope Adams of Oxford to a key a 27-11 run and grab a 42-28 lead at intermission. Lady Ranger sophomore guards De'Kisha Fondon of Water Valley and Sabrina Townsend of Batesville each chipped in with three-point baskets to spark the rally.

Northwest expanded its lead to 17 points in the second half before the Lady Bulldogs made one final run. Hinds trimmed its deficit to 76-68 with just over five minutes left. 

Lady Ranger freshman forward Dequashia Simpson of Milan, Tenn., and freshman guard Lanita Futrell (pictured right) of Coldwater combined for eight points in the final three minutes to lift Northwest to the victory.

Fondon led the Lady Rangers with 20 points, while Simpson added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Adams chipped in with 13 points, while Futrell and guard Sandrick Bowen of Ashland collected 11 points each.

Fondon, Futrell, Simpson, and Tamara Wadlington of Oxford combined for 16 of Northwest's 20 steals.

The Lady Rangers host Volunteer State Tuesday, Nov. 17 at Howard Coliseum in Senatobia. Tip off is at 5 p.m.
 


 

Northwest falls to Arkansas Baptist in home opener

Poor shooting and turnovers proved to be the downfall of the Northwest Mississippi Community College Lady Rangers in their 78-61 home-opening loss to the Arkansas Baptist Lady Buffalos Nov. 9 at Howard Coliseum in Senatobia.

Northwest shot just 33.8 percent from the field and committed 33 turnovers en route to falling to 1-1 on the season.

The Lady Rangers missed eight of their first 10 attempts from the field and fell behind 11-4 six minutes into the contest. Baskets by Sabrina Townsend of Batesville and De'Kisha Fondon of Water Valley keyed a 13-5 run as Northwest fought its way back and only trailed 33-32 at halftime.

Lady Ranger forwards Dequashia Simpson of Milan, Tenn., and Hope Adams of Oxford combined to score the first eight points of the second half as Northwest claimed a 40-33 advantage with 17:34 remaining.

Arkansas Baptist out-scored the Lady Rangers 29-12 over the next 11 minutes to take a 62-52 lead.

Simpson converted a three-point play with 4:42 remaining to cut Northwest's deficit to 65-58, but that's as close as the Lady Rangers could get.

Northwest scored just one point in the final three minutes.

Four different players scored 10 points for the Lady Rangers including Fondon, Adams, Simpson, and Tamara Wadlington of Oxford, while Townsend added nine.

Simpson also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, while Lanita Futrell of Coldwater dished out six assists.

Lady Rangers defeat Volunteer State in season opener

Four players scored in double figures to lead the Northwest Mississippi Community College Lady Rangers to a 72-67 season-opening victory against Volunteer State Nov. 3 in Gallatin, Tenn.

Northwest sophomore forward Hope Adams (pictured left) of Oxford, a transfer from the University of Memphis, led the Lady Rangers with 16 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Sabrina Townsend of Batesville added 15 points, while sophomore De'Kisha Fondon of Water Valley scored 14. Freshman forward Dequashia Simpson of Milan, Tenn., was impressive in her debut with 12 points and six rebounds.

Northwest built a 36-28 lead at halftime and stretched its advantage to 18 points in the second half. Volunteer State made a late rally, but the Lady Rangers used baskets by Townsend, Simpson, and Adams to seal the victory.

Northwest shot 41.1 percent from the field by connecting on 28 of 68 attempts. The Lady Rangers converted eight of 22 three-point attempts.
