Goforth places 92nd at NJCAA National Tournament

Northwest Mississippi Community College golfer Grant Goforth was the Rangers' most consistent player this season. In fact, he turned in the lowest score in four of the six tournaments Northwest participated in this spring.

Goforth, a freshman from Batesville, got a chance to compete against the best players from across the country by qualifying for the NJCAA Division II National Championship Tournament May 19-22 at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala.

Goforth, turned in a final score of 75-76-82-83 to finish tied for 92nd place in the event. Goforth was among the top 30 in the nation after the first two days of the tournament, but shot a 165 on the last two days to move him down the leaderboard.

"This tournament was a great experience for Grant," said Northwest Golf Coach Don Edwards. "He is only going to get better, and that should really pay off for him next season."

Goforth qualified for the national tournament by placing eighth at the Region XXIII Tournament in Starkville on April 28. Goforth finished in the top 10 in three events during the spring, including a season-best 4th place at the East Central Invitational March 1 in Forest.
 



Rangers finish seventh at MACJC State Tournament
The Northwest Mississippi Community College golf team placed seventh at the MACJCState Tournament April 6-7 at Kirkwood National in Holly Springs.
Northwest shot a two-day score of 692, which placed it 37 shots behind tournament champion Copiah-Lincoln at 655.

Gulf Coast was runner-up with a 666, followed by East Mississippi at 669, Northeast at 670, and Hinds at 671. Holmes placed fifth with a 690.

Freshman Grant Goforth of Batesville led Northwest by finishing ninth at the event with a 79-85-164, while sophomore Eric Ainsworth of Senatobia turned in an 82-83-165 to place 11th.

Northwest sophomore Nick Burstyne of Olive Branch finished 33rd at the tournament with an 86-92-178, followed by sophomore Zack Lambert of Marks in 42nd place with an 89-97-186, and freshman Austin Oliver of Olive Branch in 47th place with a 98-96-194.
 



 

NWCC places sixth at final regular season tournament

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger golf team readied itself for the state tournament by placing sixth at the Northeast Invitational March 30-31 at Corinth.

The two-day event was the final regular season match before the MACJC State Tournament which runs April 6-7 at Kirkwood National in Holly Springs.

Northwest turned in a final score of 307-322-629 at the Northeast Invitational. The Rangers finished 36 shots behind first-place Gulf Coast which shot a 593. East Mississippi placed second with a 598, while Copiah-Lincoln was third with a 600.

Sophomore Eric Ainsworth (pictured left) of Senatobia led the Rangers and placed 18th at the event with a 74-79-153. Sophomore Zack Lambert of Marks finished 29th with a 76-80-156.

Grant Goforth of Batesville placed 33rd with a 77-81-158. Nick Burstyne of Olive Branch shot an 80-82-162 to place 38th, while Austin Oliver of Olive Branch finished 42nd with an 80-85-165.

 


Rangers post a season-best fifth place finish at Copiah-Lincoln

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger golf team played some of its best golf of the spring and earned a top five finish at the Copiah-Lincoln Invitational March 8-9 at Wesson.

Northwest turned in scores of 308-309-617 to place fifth at the event. Copiah-Lincoln claimed first place with a 297-295-592, while Gulf Coast was second with a 302-297-599.

Individually, Ranger freshman Grant Goforth of Batesville finished sixth with a 75-72-147. Goforth placed fourth a week before at the East Central Invitational.

Other Northwest scores included Eric Ainsworth of Senatobia who tied for 14th place with a 75-77-152, while Nick Burstyne of Olive Branch tied for 42nd with a 79-80-159. Zack Lambert of Marks tied for 47th with a 79-82-161, while Austin Oliver of Olive Branch tied for 54th with an 83-80-163.

 


Goforth earns All-Tournament honors at East Central Invitational

Freshman Grant Goforth (pictured left) posted his best performance of the season to lead the Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger golf team to a seventh place finish at the East Central Invitational Feb. 28-March 1 in Forest.

Goforth, of Batesville, finished fourth at the event with a two-day score of 71-77-148 and was named to the All-Tournament team.

As a team, Northwest and Holmes Community College were tied for seventh with a final score of 640. The Rangers shot a 318 on the opening day and followed that up with a 322.

Other Northwest individual scores included Eric Ainsworth of Senatobia in 35th place with an 83-79-162, while Austin Oliver of Olive Branch finished 40th with an 83-81-164.

Zack Lambert of Marks placed 44th with an 81-85-166, while Nick Burstyne of Olive Branch was 52nd with an 83-87-170.
 



Rangers finish in 8th place at Hinds Invitational

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger golf team placed eighth at the Hinds Invitational Feb. 22-23 at Raymond.

Northwest turned in a two-day team score of 654. The Rangers shot a 336 on the first day of the event and improved on the second day with a 318.

Northwest freshman Grant Goforth of Batesville finished tied for 19th place by shooting a team-leading score of 84-74-158.

Other Ranger scores included sophomore Nick Burstyne of Olive Branch in 37th place with an 82-81-163, and sophomore Eric Ainsworth of Senatobia in 42nd place with an 82-83-165. Freshman Austin Oliver of Olive Branch shot an 88-81-169 and sophomore Zack Lambert of Marks turned in an 89-82-171.


 

Northwest golf team places 7th at first event of spring

The Northwest Mississippi Community College golf team kicked off the 2009 spring schedule by placing seventh at the Gulf Coast Invitational Feb. 16-17 at Laurel Country Club.

Northwest shot a two-day score of 657. The Rangers turned in a score of 325 on the first day of the event and a 332 on the final day.

Individually, Northwest was led by sophomore Eric Ainsworth of Senatobia who placed 15th with a 161. Freshman Grant Goforth of Batesville finished 21st with a 163.

Sophomore Zack Lambert of Marks was 28th with a 165, followed by sophomore Nick Burstyne of Olive Branch with a 174, and freshman Austin Oliver of Olive Branch who shot 177.
